Counselling and coaching

in the biblical context

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will

Helping people is not about using my own  own strength,

It is about helping them recognise God-given strengths and wisdom, and guiding them in accordance with their faith towards purposeful living.

We are continually changing and growing both emotionally and spiritually, as we face the trials and tribulations of life. Sometimes, regardless of our faith, at such times most of us need a helping hand to guide us in the right direction.  Some situations such as relationship issues can get worse without early intervention or the appropriate help at the right time. Talking to a spiritual leader trusted friend can be helpful, however, I use a range of practical psychological tools when working with behavioural issues and long-term faulty thought patterns, without compromising biblical beliefs and values.  For example: using practical knowledge gleaned from psychology may provide insight into what is encouraging a person to remain with a behaviour they believe is against their faith. I use cognitive methods to recognise shame and guilt, so they can incorporate behaviour changing skills with prayer and meditation. In collaboration with my client I use communication skills, developmental theories and human needs, to understand the root causes of the issues. Once the situation identified I support them in going forward according to their faith and beliefs.

An Integrated approach

The ability to change is within you

I am mindful that a counsellor is expected not to impose his or her values or beliefs on a client. As a person-centred counsellor, I believe helping the client explore their issues helps them understand their feelings better while respecting their value system. The Christian approach is for those of you with faith in biblical principles and trust that your faith is a major component of the healing process. I encourage you to talk to your church leaders and seek support and guidance during emotional hardship. However, In the event, where your situation is complex,  getting worse or affecting your everyday life, it is important to speak to a trained counsellor, who is able to explore your situation in-depth and work with you collaboratively. Having a non-judgemental, safe place to talk and be heard is the first step in finding your way back to where you truly believe you should be.

Experience

I utilise my knowledge and experience over 20 years as a Christian support person, formal training in clinical counselling, personal experience and faith-based intervention. I understand how debilitating it can be when emotional turmoil overpowers us to the point where we feel lost or feelings of shame and uncertainty of whom to talk to. I also believe in the power of unconditional faith. I acknowledge that my role is to guide you and mentor you. The ultimate healing and restoration for those who believe in the Holy scripture lie within the scripture itself.
